June 12, 2006 - California League (CalL1)
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

ADELANTO-Brian McFall scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as High Desert came back from what had been a 4-1 deficit midway through the game to defeat the Quakes 6-5 before 1,134 fans at Mavericks Stadium Monday night. The win moved the Mavericks to 33-31 while the Quakes fell to 32-32 and dropped to 3.5 games behind Inland Empire for first place in the Southern Division.

The Quakes never trailed until the winning run was scored, taking a 1-0 lead in the first on Pat Reilly's RBI groundout. The Mavericks answered back with a run in the second to tie it but Rancho Cucamonga then scored single runs in three straight innings to take a 4-1 lead. Reilly's RBI triple scored Cliff Remole in the third and Drew Toussaint and Freddy Sandoval followed with solo home runs in the fourth and fifth, respectively. High Desert cut the lead to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth on a grounder by Irving Falu and a double by Wilver Perez, and Sandoval's throwing error to start the sixth set the stage for Geraldo Valentin's game-tying single.

Sandoval atoned for his mistake in the seventh as he drew a leadoff walk from Brandon Weeden, went to third on a hit-and-run single by Sean Rodriguez, and scored on Ben Johnson's sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. But in the bottom of the eighth, Rusty Brown hammered a hanging curveball from reliever Frederic DeLoizaga-Carney for a solo home run to left to tie the game at 5-5. Then in the ninth, Brian McFall singled with one out and moved to second on a groundout. The Quakes opted to walk the switch-hitting Falu with first base open and brought on right-hander Kevin Lynch to face the right-handed hitting Perez. Lynch missed on a full-count however, walking Perez and loading the bases. Then with the count 0-2 on Brown, Lynch threw a slider down and away that eluded catcher Tim Duff as McFall scored the winning run.

Gabe DeHoyos (3-1) worked a scoreless ninth to earn the win, while the loss was charged to DeLoizaga (1-3) who allowed two runs in 2.2 innings. The Quakes wasted a quality start from Fernando Rodriguez, who left in line for his seventh win but got a no-decision after allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits in six innings. Sandoval and Toussaint both had two hits for the Quakes, who left a runner on base in every inning and 11 aboard for the game.

Game two in the four-game series is set for 7:05 p.m. Tuesday and will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. Lefty Micah Posey (2-6, 4.19 ERA) will go for the Quakes against High Desert's Kyle Crist (1-1, 4.57 ERA). For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
