Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

SAN JOSE-All four Quakes runs scored with two outs and Jose Arredondo turned in another brilliant outing as Rancho Cucamonga shutout San Jose 4-0 before 2,833 fans at Municipal Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Quakes took two of three from the defending league champions, including another shutout Friday night. The Quakes improved to 32-31 and climbed to within three games of first-place Inland Empire, while San Jose fell to 38-26.

Giants starter Brooks McNiven retired the side in order in the first two innings and had two outs and the bases empty in the top of the third when Nate Sutton poked a groundball up the middle. Second baseman Mark Minicozzi made a diving attempt and got a glove on the ball, but only managed to slow it down into short center field as Sutton turned on the jets and made it to second with a hustling double. The extra 90 feet paid immediate dividends when Josh LeBlanc followed with an RBI single to left to put the Quakes up 1-0. Rancho Cucamonga then struck for three runs in the fourth, with Ben Johnson, Tim Duff and Sutton all providing two-out run-scoring base hits to pad the lead to 4-0.

That was more than enough support for Arredondo, who after stranding runners on the corners in the first got into a groove and ended up facing the minimum three hitters in five of his seven innings. Kevin Lynch worked around a pair of walks in the eighth and Joe Torres struck out a pair in the ninth to put the finishing touches on Rancho Cucamonga's sixth shutout of the season.

Arredondo (4-4) allowed just three hits over his seven scoreless frames, with three walks and seven more strikeouts to push his league-leading total to 92 in just 68 innings of work. McNiven (3-4) allowed all four runs and eight hits in four innings, with no walks and three strikeouts. LeBlanc finished 3-5 with an RBI and Sutton went 2-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

The Quakes now head to their final destination on this 10-game, three-city road trip, beginning a four-game series with the High Desert Mavericks Monday at 7:05 p.m. The game will be carried live on KWRM-AM 1370 and online at www.rcquakes.com. Fernando Rodriguez (6-3, 4.61 ERA) will start for the Quakes and Billy Buckner (7-1, 3.54 ERA) will start for the Mavs. For more information, please call the Quakes at (909) 481-5000.
