Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - After last night's 16-8 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies, the Colorado Rockies announced that Sky Sox centerfielder and top prospect Carlos Gonzalez was called up to the big leagues. Gonzalez had started that night's game and gone 1-for-4 with a run scored before being pinch-hit for in the eighth inning. To make room for Gonzalez on the Rockies 25-man roster, the Rockies optioned down outfielder Matt Murton.
At the time of his call-up, Gonzalez, 23, was leading all of professional baseball with 59 RBIs. He was also leading the Sky Sox in homers (10), triples (7), extra base hits (29) and slugging percentage (.630). Widely regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball, Gonzalez will be making his Rockies debut tonight as Colorado travels to St. Louis.
Murton, 27, will be rejoining the Sky Sox after playing the last five weeks with the Rockies. With Colorado he hit .267 with a homer and six RBIs in 22 games. Murton started the year as the Sky Sox right fielder before being called up to Colorado on April 29. Before being promoted, Murton was leading the Sky Sox with a .411 batting average, four homers and 19 RBIs in just 18 games. At the time of his departure, he also had an active 13-game hitting streak.
