Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Reading, Pa. -- RHP Scott Mathieson was called up today and will be starting Saturday at Citizens Bank Park vs. Tampa Bay's Scott Kazmir. Mathieson was one of the elite pitchers of the Eastern League going 6-2 with a 3.05 era before being called up.
The last player to go from Reading to Philadelphia during the Minor League season was David Coggin who was actually promoted to Scranton, 6/19/00, but was recalled by Philadelphia before he left Reading. Cliff Politte also made the jump during the '99 season. Other R-Phils that skipped AAA were Anderson Machado who was called up mid-September when the Minor League season was finished, and Carlos Silva who made the big league squad out of spring training in 2002 following a 15-win season at Reading in 2001.
Mathieson earned Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors April 24-30 going 2-0, 14.0 IP, 9 H, 2 ER, 3 BB and 18 SO during that span. Along with winning his last four decisions he ranked among the top in several pitching categories in the EL. He was T-1st in wins (6), 2nd in IP (85.2, ranked 10th among all Minor Leaguers), 13th in ERA (3.05), 9th in WHIP (1.09) and 1st in SO (95, 3rd among all Minor Leaguers).
He struck out a season-high 11 batters twice, 4/24 at Connecticut and 5/31 at Binghamton, and also struck out 10 or more hitters in 10 starts this season with Reading. Known for his longevity, Mathieson pitched into the 6th inning in 12 of his 13 starts and through the 6th in 10 of 13 starts, and threw 14.2 consecutive scoreless innings over parts of three appearances, 5/26-6/6. His Longest outing of the year came on 6/6 at Binghamton allowing 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 2 BB, 8 SO, and getting the win.
Mathieson was 3-1 on the mound both at home and on the road. He dominated right-handed batters allowing them to go 32-189 (.189). Lefties were 35-138 (.254). Beyond his pitching numbers, Mathieson also made impact on the offensive side hitting .179 (3-17) with 2 HR and 3 RBI, and led all Reading starters with five sacrifice bunts.
Selected by the Phillies in the 17th round of the June 2002 draft, Mathieson was ranked the 5th best prospect for the Phillies this season by Baseball America. He also played for Canada in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. In 2005 he threw for Clearwater (A) and earned Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week honors, 5/23-29 (0-0, 1.50 ERA) and had 118 SO.
