VERO BEACH, FL - Joe Mather went 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBI and Jose Garcia allowed just two runs over seven innings as the Cardinals stayed hot by beating the Dodgers 5-4 on Wednesday night.

With a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Mather connected for a two-run homer off Dodgers' starter Glenn Bott (0-1) to put the Cards up three. John Santor hit a solo shot in the sixth to give Garcia more than enough support.

Garcia (3-3) walked just one while striking out five on the way to the victory.

The only mistake Garcia made was in the seventh inning when he gave up a two-run blast to Justin Ruggiano.

In the top of the ninth, Mather hit his second home run of the game to put the Cardinals up 5-2. It proved to be an important insurance run because the Dodgers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth off closer Mark Worrell. Worrell was able to leave the tying run stranded at second base, however, as he picked up his league-leading 18th save.

The Cardinals have now won three of four, and try to win their second consecutive road series with a victory tonight at Vero Beach.
