Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J. - Paddy Matera ‘s two-out single in the bottom of the ninth brought in Burt Reynolds with the winning run, leading the Newark Bears to an 8-7 victory over the Brockton Rox Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The win enabled the Bears (14-8) to salvage the final game of their three-game series with Brockton and drew even with the Rox (14-8) for second place in the Can-Am League standings.

The Bears manufactured the game-winning run off Rox relief pitcher Colin Lynch (0-3). With one out, Reynolds was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. After Eric McGee struck out, Todd Gossage was walked intentionally, setting up Matera's heroics. Matera also homered earlier in the game for the Bears.

Kyle Morrison (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win, his first with Newark. The Middlesex, NJ product signed with the Bears earlier this month.

Daryle Ward had three hits and three RBI for the Bears and Tim Raines, Jr. had three doubles for the winners. Keith Brachold had three hits, including a homer, his second in as many days, and Melvin Falu had three hits for Brockton.

The Bears drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning, when Raines, Jr. doubled off the left field wall and came home to score on Ward's RBI single.

The Rox then tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the second inning, scoring an unearned run, when Jorge Jimenez was hit by a pitch and came all the way around to score on a throwing error by Bears starting pitcher Victor Gonzalez, fielding a sacrifice bunt.

The Bears then took control of the game by scoring two runs in the home third. Ward had a two-run double that scored Matera and Juan Martinez, pushing the lead to 3-1.

Newark added another run in the home fourth, when Matera launched a solo homer, his second homer in the last three games, to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.

The Bears scored another single run in the home fifth on consecutive doubles from Raines, Jr. and Ward, the fourth RBI of the game for the Bears' slugging designated hitter, increasing the lead to 5-1.

Brockton then tied the game by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. The Rox got two runs on a two-run homer from Brachold and added two more runs on bases loaded walks to Ryan Royster and Dominic Ramos.

The Rox took a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh inning when Brachold scored on a throwing error by Bears catcher McGee. The Bears then tied the score in the seventh, when Raines, Jr. had his third double of the game and scored on an RBI single by Danny Santiesteban.

Back and forth, the two teams went, as Brockton took a 7-6 lead in the top of the eighth when Bears reliever Anthony Pluta uncorked a bizarre wild pitch, a throw that somehow went from the mound to the Brockton dugout, scoring Chris Valencia.

The Bears came back and tied the game at 7-7 in the eighth on an RBI single from Martinez, scoring Matera with the tying run.

The Bears begin a four-game series with the Worcester Tornadoes Monday night at 7:05 p.m. at ‘'The Den." Aaron Kalb is slated to take the start for the Bears.
