Match Preview: Scorpions vs Minnesota United

September 18, 2014 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release

The regular season is winding down for the Scorpions and this weekend's fixture marks the first of two matchups with Minnesota United - one each in San Antonio and Blaine, MN - in the final seven games. The teams occupy the top two spots in the NASL Fall Season and Combined Standings and share a short but colorful history, so expect these games to be as intense on the field and passionate in the stands as regular season games get.

The Loons won the opening game of the season 2-0 at Toyota Field and overall, the Scorpions are 2-4-5 against their northern I-35 neighbors. But Alamo City's own are riding an eight-match unbeaten streak at Toyota Field, including a team-record tying five-straight home wins. The red-and-black have surrendered only one goal the entire Fall Season at home while simultaneously scoring at least two of their own in each of those matches.

Tomasz Zahorski is now just one goal behind former Scorpion Hans Denissen on the team's all-time goal scoring list with 15 goals, captain Adrian Cann returned from a long injury layoff to earn NASL Team of the Week honors and Billy Forbes continues to lead the league in assists with six.

Minnesota United won the Spring Season and with it a guaranteed top two seed in The Championship; the NASL's four-team postseason tournament. United have continued to be a force in the fall campaign as they currently lead the Combined Standings by two points over the Scorpions. The Loons also lead the league in scoring with 36 goals and sport a league-best goal differential of +17. Former Scorpion Pablo Campos was expected to be a major part of their attack this year, but an early season injury sidelined the big Brazilian and opened the door for rookie sensation Christian Ramirez.
