FC Edmonton News Release
EDMONTON, AB (September 18, 2014) - FC Edmonton will take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies for the first time since the club's 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) season opener on Sunday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. MT KO. The match will be presented by Crosstown Auto Centre and will be a Canadian Armed Forces Appreciation Day with support from the Military Family Resource Centre (MFRC).
"It's always an exciting time when Tampa Bay come to town," said FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller. "We've always had very good, tight matches against the Rowdies and I expect the same for this week. We'll have to be at our best and put on a good show for our full house on Sunday."
FC Edmonton are coming off a draw against Indy Eleven in Week 10 action. After 16 minutes of play, Indy midfielder Victor Pineda did well to challenge Eddies "Ëkeeper John Smits and score the first goal of the match and the first of his professional career. Less than 10 minutes later, Eddies attacker Chad Burt drew a foul on the edge of the 18-yard box and free-kick specialist Neil Hlavaty sent in a world-class strike to make the match even a 1-1. The score held for the rest of the match and a point away from home could end up being invaluable to the Eddies in the race for a post season spot.
Tampa Bay Rowdies played to a frustrating 2-0 loss to Ottawa Fury FC on Saturday night in front of a home crowd at Al Lang Stadium. The Rowdies' ultra-offensive lineup pressured Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser for much of the night, but couldn't find a way onto the scoresheet. Oliver's 25th minute goal and Sinisa Ubiparipovic's stoppage time insurance goal earned all three points for Ottawa.
Despite the loss, the Rowdies remain in third place in the NASL Fall Season Standings while FC Edmonton slipped to fifth place with their point out of Indy. In the NASL Combined Standings, the Rowdies are one point behind the Carolina RailHawks for fourth place and a spot in The Championship, and FC Edmonton sit in seventh and are four points out of a spot in The Championship. The Eddies currently sit three points behind the Rowdies in the NASL Combined Standings.
The last time these two teams met was all the way back in the very first match of the 2014 NASL season in St Petersburg, Florida. The club played to a familiar 1-1 draw.
FC Edmonton will continue their push for a post season spot on Sunday against the Rowdies at Clarke Stadium. Tickets start at just $10 in the YMCA Family Fun Zone. These tickets are available at Edmonton YMCA locations. For all other ticketing options, go online to fcedmonton.com or call 780.700.2600.
