Match Preview: San Diego Mojo at Omaha Supernovas: April 20, 2024

The San Diego Mojo and Omaha Supernovas will meet for the third time in series history and second time in Nebraska on Saturday at the Chi Health Center with first serve set for 4 p.m. PT. The Supernovas came away with a 3-0 victory when the teams first met in Omaha on February 2 in what was the second-ever match for both franchises. The Mojo topped the Supernovas in four sets when the sides last met in Viejas Arena on April 2. Omaha is currently second in the Pro Volleyball Federation standings and San Diego is in fourth.

San Diego Mojo Outlook

San Diego arrives in Omaha as winners in four of their last five matches, including a four-set victory over the Supernovas. Last time out, head coach Tayyiba Haneef-Park and the Mojo defeated the Orlando Valkyries in five sets, the second-straight five-set win for the Mojo and third of the season. Kendra Dahlke led the match with 27 points and 23 kills, both career highs, to lead the offensive effort for the Mojo, while on defense, Ali Bastianelli and Morgan Lewis had five blocks each. Nootsara Tomkom chipped in with 49 assists and 29 digs. As a team, the Mojo out blocked the Valkyries, 16-8. Setter Tomkom, who earned PVF Player of the Week honors last week, continues to lead the Pro Volleyball Federation with an average of 11.0 assists per set, one of only four players averaging double-digits, while her 613 total assists are the fourth-most in the league. Thomas-Ailara is averaging a team-leading 15.5 points per match, the seventh-best mark in the league, while Ronika Stone (10.0) and Lindsey Vander Weide (8.4) rank 15th and 22nd in the PVF, respectively. Hannah Tapp leads the Mojo in spike ration (.430) and has 24 block wins while Stone ranks second with a spike ration of .399 and tops the team with 33 block wins, the 10th-most in the league.

Omaha Supernovas Outlook

Led by interim head coach Laura "Bird" Kuhn, Omaha sports the second-best overall (11-6) and home (6-3) records in the league. The Supernovas have won their last four homes matches but fell in four sets at Atlanta last time out and have dropped two of their last three matches overall, including the April 2 contest in San Diego. Brooke Nuneviller paces the Omaha squad with 13.8 points per match, the ninth-best average in the league, while Bethania de la Cruz is scoring 12.5 points per match, the 11th-highest average in the PVF. Sydney Hilley (410 assists) and Natalia Valentin-Anderson (315 assists) are the primary setters for the Supernovas.

Following Saturday's match, San Diego will head home to host Omaha at Viejas Arena on Tuesday, April 23. First serve is at 7 p.m. PT in what will be the final regular season match between the franchises this season.
