WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph Soccer Club continues its' 2021 U.S. Open Cup campaign in the third round this Wednesday, April 20th hosting MLS club, Charlotte FC.

While not garnering a winning result in league play upon their first two matches (0-1-1), Greenville has performed well in the Open Cup tournament thus far, with a 2-0 win over Oakland Roots in the Second Round. Triumph SC enters the match following a 1-1 draw in league play at North Carolina FC last Saturday. Even with an early goal from Venton Evans Jr., Greenville could not maintain the lead and was forced to defend once center defender, Evan Lee, was sent out of the match last Saturday after receiving his second yellow. The good news for Greenville is that Lee will be eligible to play during the Wednesday Open Cup match according to USSF rules.

The Greenville Triumph last played Open Cup in 2019, defeating League One rival South Georgia Tormenta FC 1-0 on Cole Seiler's late-match heroics. Greenville hosted the Charleston Battery in the following round, holding the advantage for much of the match before conceding a match-winning goal to Charleston in the 89th minute. Greenville's most recent USOC defeat of Oakland Roots SC, thanks to goals from Jake Keegan and Don Smart, has propelled the team forward and given them the ability to host a member of the MLS side.

Similarly, to Greenville's first U. S. Open Cup competitor, Charlotte FC is marking its' first entry into the historic tournament this year. Despite beginning its inaugural season in 2022, Charlotte is sitting midway through MLS standings ranking 8th out of 14 teams. The North Carolina-based club has won three matches and lost five since its inception. Shortly after losing their first two matches, they won three out of the next four matches including a last-minute defeat of Atlanta United. Charlotte enters Wednesday after a 2-1 road loss against New England last weekend.

This match will mark the first time the Greenville Triumph SC has hosted an MLS team at Triumph Stadium. Both teams are looking to compete and walk away with a win tomorrow night, either way this is sure to be a clash of the Carolinas.
