San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Friday, August 28, 2015) - Fresh off of a 1-0 win at home, the San Antonio Scorpions will hit the road this weekend to take on the same team that they defeated last weekend - the Jacksonville Armada. The match will be the 100th regular season game in franchise history and the Scorpions boast an all-time mark of 43-20-36(W-T-L). Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central on Saturday night and the game can be seen on KSAT 12.2 MeTV or ESPN3.com.
"We are looking forward to it. It is a great team, great organization," Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina said. "They have only lost one game at home this season, so they are a difficult team to beat there. But at the same time, we are confident that if we can stick to and execute the gameplan that we can get a result."
The win last week helped lift the Scorpions from the floor of the NASL Fall Season table all the way up to ninth . The red and black have 20 points on the year and are only six points back of the fourth-place (and final playoff position) Tampa Bay Rowdies in the combined table with one less game played.
The Armada will present the same challenges as last week as the Scorpions face a Jacksonville team that has several weapons up front, though the Scorpions boast a potent front line of their own that Jacksonville will have to deal with.
"I don't mind it, playing back to back. You know your team well, it's fresh obviously. (We) watched the video and saw the things that we did well and things that they did well that might have hurt us," Marcina said. "We know it is fresh in their minds, too. We know they are saying 'the team does x,y,z can we hurt them.' It is a bit of a chess match."
This week the battle of coaching wits will take place at Community First Park at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The knights, bishops, and pawns will be the 11 players on each side. At the end of the evening, the king will be whichever team can come away from the field with all three points. With a string of home games coming up in September for the Scorpions, a road win could be a bold move towards the ultimate goal of checkmate on a playoff spot.
"Right now, it is just about getting points. We have a number of home games in a row coming up," Marcina said. "Six of the upcoming eight are at home, so if we can get a result on the road and then have a good stretch of home games and get some points there, we could be somewhere else on the table."
By the Numbers:
This is the third all-time meeting between San Antonio and Jacksonville. Both teams have won on home ground. Jacksonville were 2-1 winners over the Scorpions in the meeting on May 2 as Millien (3') and Keita (90') were the goal scorers for the Armada and Omar Cummings (9') was the lone scorer for the Scorpions on the east coast of Florida. Last week, the Scorpions were 1-0 winners in San Antonio thanks to a goal by Billy Forbes.
