South Georgia Tormenta FC News Release
STATESBORO, Ga. - South Georgia Tormenta FC will host Fort Lauderdale CF this Saturday, April 17, at 7 p.m. ET for its first home match of the 2021 USL League One season. Six months since Tormenta FC's last regular-season competition, the South Georgia side is ready to enter the proving ground once again in Erk Russell Park.
Tormenta FC looks to start the new season off strong with its first win of the season, while Fort Lauderdale is coming off a 0-1 loss at home against New England Revolution II. A goal scored in the 50th minute by New England Revolution II was the only goal of the match, despite numerous close chances by the home side.
"Fort Lauderdale is coming up here to right some wrongs in terms of how they feel from last week, so we've got an amazing challenge ahead of us, but we're not a very easy team to play against ourselves," TFC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. "I anticipate that we will cause a lot of problems for them as well."
Key returners for Tormenta FC include midfielder Luca Mayr-Fälten, goalkeeper Pablo Jara and midfielder Marco Micaletto. Jara posted four clean sheets and tallied forty-nine saves for Tormenta FC in 2020 league play. Returners Micaletto and Mayr-Fälten led the Tormenta offense last season with three goals each and will be crucial to the Tormenta FC attack.
On the Fort Lauderdale roster, key returners include Rivaldo Ibarra, Modesto Mendez, Frank Nodarse, Francisco Raggio, Brian Rosales and former TFC2 player Christian Lue Young.
"We have high expectations," goalkeeper Pablo Jara said. "I think we have a brilliant mix of returning players and young, talented lads and a new coaching staff. We want to convince the community to fall in love with soccer. We dream to be a team that is exciting to watch.
"We dream to be a team that is young, that many people from around the world put their eyes on Statesboro and see that we are doing a good job here from the coaches to the people taking care of the fields, all the way to ownership. We have high expectations in that we want to show the rest of the world how we do things here."
During the 2020 USL League One season, Tormenta FC and Fort Lauderdale faced off in a home-and-home series. Fort Lauderdale secured the first victory at Tormenta FC's home field (2-1), but Tormenta FC brought the intensity in the later matchup on the road in Fort Lauderdale (2-1). Looking to break the even record, both teams will suit up this Saturday in the Boro.
