Rio Grande Valley Dorados News Release
HIDALGO, TX: May 31, 2005 â arenafootball2 announced their weekly awards for Week 9 action and Rio Grande Valley Dorados defensive specialist Norman Mason earned ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for a second consecutive week. Mason, a 5'10 185-pound native of Paducah, Kentucky, has played in two games with the Dorados and has received the af2's ADT Defensive Player of the Week in both contests. In his first game, Mason set a franchise record with 12 tackles and also nabbed 2 interceptions. Saturday night, Mason tied former Dorado Eddie Moten's franchise single-game record of three interceptions. Mason had four takeaways in the contest, as he also recovered a fumble on a kickoff. The Dorados took advantage of his turnovers, as they tallied 18 points off the turnovers. The points helped the Dorados tally 39 second half points after a scoreless first half to defeat the South Georgia Wildcats 39-37. It was a bittersweet performance for Mason, who completed the task against the former club that released him after two games this season. In the combined two games he has played, Mason has 15 tackles and 5 interceptions defensively.
The honor is the second time he has received the award and the second this season. Mason becomes the second player this season to receive the award twice, joining Matt Forbes of Quad City. Prior to the two awards this season, Mason last earned an honor in Week 2 of the 2003 season as a member of the Louisville Fire (US Army Ironman). Last season, Karleton Thomas received ADT Defensive Player of the Game in Week 1 and Eddie Motten received the same honor for Week 14 and 18. Moten was the only two-time recipient of the award last season. Media members seeking an interview with Mason and/or Dorados Head Coach Kevin Guy are encouraged to contact Chris Due with the Dorados at 956-843-5656.
The Dorados next home game will be June 11th, as the Dorados host the Tulsa Talons at Chase Field inside the Dodge Arena. Individual tickets for the game and all other home games are already on sale. Additional info can also be found by visiting the Dorados online at www.doradosfootball.com.
