Mascot Gets A Walk Off Win As Birthday Present, 7-6

June 24, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

The Suns walk off on a birthday celebration for the Sun's mascot Ray as Pittsfield beats Torrington by a score of 7-6.

The birthday celebration was for the summer solstice on the 22nd. So it was a (sun)-delayed birthday party at Wahconah Park. For the game, lefty Skyluar Neal was on the mound for the first time in a Suns' uniform and was opposed by Titans' lefty Jordan Lozzi. Titan's took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first as the reigning Player of the Week in the FCBL, Ryan Plourde, hit an RBI double.

It would be fitting, considering the circumstances for the day, that there would indeed be a sun delay. It wasn't long, being only eight minutes, but a great eight minutes to recognize. Pittsfield would rally in the bottom of the third as Ryan Deitrich hit an RBI single to tie the game. Later on with Deitrich on third, a balk was called by both umpires as Deitrich trotted across the plate to take the lead.

The fourth would be one of the wildest half innings this season for the Suns. after three straight singles, a scary moment as a throw from the shortstop Brandon Howard bounced to first basement Tito Marrero. As the throw got away from Marrero, he went down on what was an undisclosed injury that brought Michael Ruegar into left and Deitrich went over to first. Two runs would score on the play. Three more runs would score in the inning through two wild pitches, an RBI single, and an RBI double (in that order of scoring plays). During the RBI single, it was Matt Cianci who bunted during the play it went down the first base line as Neal looked it down the line as it spun in the dirt on the chalk. Ryan Zielinski who moved to third on the play, tried to take advantage of Neal, who wasn't looking. But a quick look and quick throw to Anthony Corona, who blocked the plate, Zielinski was tagged out at home. This would infuriate Titans' head coach Misha Dworken, who was thrown out of the game by home plate umpire John Gillette. So the inning would end with a score of 6-2 Titans.

The Suns would chip away at the four-run lead by the Titans. In the sixth, Brandon Slattery hit a two RBI single. In the eighth, Michael Ruegar hit an RBI single and a clutch sacrifice fly by Anthony Corona that would tie the game at 6-6. In the ninth, Howard hit a single to start the inning. Then, McLam would bunt over Howard. Except, he would bunt Howard home. The throw to first from the pitcher, Austin Bailey, was over the head of first baseman, Kyle Murphy, and went into right field. Howard stayed at third, but Gus Craig in right hurled an errant throw to home plate (thinking Howard was going home). This allowed Howard to get mobbed by his teammates after he slid into home plate.

The winning pitcher was Adam Krebs who preserved the tie for the Suns in the ninth. The losing pitcher was Andrew Bailey who did not give up an earned run, but was on the mound as the Suns' walked off. The player of the game was Ryan Deitrich who was 3-3 with a double, a stolen base, and also provide his team with a defensive position change mid-way into the game. Pittsfield improved to 7-6 as Torrington drops to 6-5. Next time out for the Suns is on the road against the 4-8 Brockton Rox tomorrow with a scheduled first pitch at 1:05 PM.
