Martinez's Single Wins it for Cutters

August 9, 2011 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Williamsport Crosscutters News Release

The Williamsport Crosscutters defeated the Staten Island Yankees 1-0 Tuesday night on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by Harold Martinez.

Despite mustering just two hits through the first eight innings of play, the Cutters were kept in the game by excellent team pitching, as they improved to 29-22 on the year. They remain one game back of Auburn and Mahoning Valley for the division lead.

Both starting pitchers excelled tonight, as Williamsport's Adam Morgan threw five shutout innings in his seventh start of the year. Staten Island righty Bryan Mitchell was even better, hurling six shutout frames while allowing just one hit.

After relievers Austin Brough and Gabriel Arias combined for four shutout innings of relief, the Cutters finally cashed in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Altherr reached on a two-out infield single to shortstop, advancing to second on an errant through by Staten Island's Cito Culver. The next batter, Martinez, chopped a single through the middle off Philip Wetherell to bring home Altherr for the thrilling victory.

Williamsport will host Staten Island again on Wednesday and Thursday at 7:05pm. Every Cutters game can be heard on ESPN Radio 104.1 FM, ESPN 1050 AM, or online at crosscutters.com
