Martens Selected as a Finalist for Wichita Pro Athlete of the Year

Wichita, KS (June 19th) - The Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League, powered by Toyota, are excited to announce that Andrew Martens has been selected as a finalist for the Wichita Professional Athlete of the Year Award that will be announced on June 26th at the 2014 Greater Wichita Sports Banquet. The event is in conjunction with the Johnny Bench Award, which is given to the NCAA D-1 College Catcher of the Year.

Martens, 32, was a finalist for this past year's CHL Most Outstanding Defenseman Award. He earned that same honor in 2010-11 after racking up 54 points and was named to the All-CHL Team. The Calgary, Alberta native Martens has tallied at least 30 points in seven of his nine professional seasons. Martens played three years of college hockey at Bemidji State University before turning pro in 2006 with the ECHL's Greenville Grrrowl. Martens saw extensive time in the AHL during the 2008-09 season with Manitoba and Toronto. He also earned a call-up during the Thunder's run to the CHL Finals in 2011-12 season with the Oklahoma City Barons and the Toronto Marlies.

Other awards that will be handed out are Male and Female High School Athlete of the Year and Male and Female College Athlete of the Year. This year's keynote speaker is former Denver Bronco defensive lineman, Karl Mecklenburg. Tables are still available for the banquet.
