Edmonton Trappers News Release
Shortstop Marshall McDougall was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, a home run and three RBI as the Oklahoma RedHawks edged the Edmonton Trappers 5-4 Tuesday night at TELUS Field, earning a split of the four-game series in the process. McDougall, who the Texas Rangers acquired in the Rule V draft from the Oakland A's in the off-season, was only promoted to Oklahoma from Double-A Frisco a few days ago. He also homered in Monday afternoon's game. Edmonton's two losses in the series were both by one run, with the club mounting late rallies in both contests, only to come up short. In the two victories the Trappers also came from behind, putting together huge five-run rallies to overcome Oklahoma leads. The Trappers will begin an eight-game road trip on Thursday night in Sacramento against the River Cats. Wednesday is an off day for the club. Eighteen of Edmonton's final 26 games will be on the road, where the Trappers currently have a 27-28 record. Edmonton has won seven of its last nine games away from TELUS Field.
After retiring the first six batters that he faced 20-year-old Jose Dominguez (1-0), the Oklahoma starting pitcher on Tuesday night, ran into trouble in the third inning. Scott Hodges led off with a single up the middle and the next batter, Randy Knorr, drew a walk to put runners at first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Anthony Medrano moved up both runners for Peter Bergeron, who reached first on an error by Oklahoma second baseman Manny Alexander. Both Hodges and Knorr scored on the play, putting the Trappers up by two runs. The RedHawks came right back in the top of the fourth inning with two runs off Trapper starter Scott Downs (1-0). Mike Lamb drew a walk with one down and scored on a two-out triple by McDougall. Gerald Laird followed with a double that plated McDougall with the tying run. The RedHawks took the lead in the sixth inning courtesy of a two-run home run off the bat of the Oklahoma shortstop. With one out in the frame first baseman Jason Hart hit a double to right-center field and McDougall followed with his second longball of the season.
With one out in the top of the seventh inning Danny Ardoin punched a single into left field and center fielder Ryan Christenson, followed with a walk to put runners at first and second. Jose Rodriguez took over from Downs at that point and proceeded to walk Manny Alexander and Lamb, forcing Ardoin home with the RedHawks fifth run. Downs allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks, while fanning a season-high seven batters in 6.1 innings. The Trappers mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth inning off Oklahoma reliever C.J. Nitkowski. Bergeron led off the frame with a single up the middle and Luis Figueroa followed with a base hit into right field to put runners at first and second. Terrmel Sledge grounded out, moving the runners over for first baseman Ryan Balfe, who doubled down the right field line, plating Bergeron and Figueroa. Nitkowski got Valentino Pascucci and Matt Cepicky to ground out to end the threat. He turned the ball over to Reynaldo Garcia who recorded the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.
