LANCASTER, Calif. - Brooks Marlow blasted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the JetHawks over the Modesto Nuts on Thursday night at The Hangar, 5-3.
Marlow, who entered the game as a defensive replacement for Yulieski Gurriel in the sixth inning, followed Bobby Boyd's one-out triple with his fifth home run of the season. Gurriel went 0-for-2 with a sacrifice fly in his second game with the JetHawks.
Lancaster went up 2-0 with single runs in the first two innings. Johnny Sewald led off in the first with a double and moved to second on a Boyd grounder, before scoring on Gurriel's sac-fly. In the second, Jason Martin led off with a walk, stole second, and scored two batters later on Aaron Mizell's RBI single.
Modesto took the lead on a pair of homers in the third and fourth against Lancaster starter Dean Deetz.
Omar Carrizales hit a solo shot and Dom Nunez went deep with a two-run blast.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jamie Ritchie delivered an RBI single to tie the game, 3-3. It remained tied until the eighth.
Ralph Garza (1-0) picked up the win with three shutout innings and seven strikeouts in relief. Jacob Dorris walked a pair in the ninth with one out, but struck out the final two batters of the game to secure the win and his 10th save in as many opportunities.
Marc Magliano (0-1) took the loss in relief for Modesto.
The JetHawks (61-49) and Nuts (43-68) continue their four-game series on Friday night at The Hangar. Akeem Bostick (2-1) will start for Lancaster against Yency Almonte (8-8). First pitch is 6:35 p.m.
