Marlins Split Offense-Filled Doubleheader with Edenton

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C.- Morehead City welcomed the first-place Edenton Steamers to Big Rock Stadium on Thursday for a double-header, during which each team won one of the seven-inning games thanks to tremendous offensive outputs from their respective teams.
Morehead City erupted for nine runs in the first game, unofficially winning their second straight ballgame (the game counts as a makeup for the June 5 rainout) with a 9-2 rout of the Steamers, while Edenton exploded for 18 runs in game two, a contest which they ended up winning by a 18-1 final.
Stanford right-hander Cal Quantrill got his first nod of the season for the Marlins in the first game, and was as close to perfect as a pitcher can be.
Quantrill tossed four innings, did not allow a base runner and struck out four batters. He was credited with the win, his first of the season.
"He gave us a quality start, and then our bats were able to come in and do some things offensively," said head coach Sam Carel. "It was a great team win."
The Marlins gave Quantrill plenty to work with in that first game. They scored four times in the second inning, getting an RBI single from Jacob Bruce, and a two-run double from Luke Tewes.
Tewes then extended the lead in the fourth when he roped another RBI double, giving him a season-high three RBI in the game. All of those runs came off of starter Miguel Navarro.
The Marlins continued the hit parade when Navarro was lifted in favor of Zach Eden. In Eden's first inning of work in the fifth, he allowed a one-out single to Johnny Caputo, then gave up a two-run home run to Jacob Bruce, his first of the season.
The Marlins' 11 hits made it the second straight night they have had double-digit hits, and the fifth time in the last seven games. The win broke a CPL-high ten-game winning streak for Edenton.
"Our guys are just seeing the ball really well right now," Carel said. "They are doing a good job hitting the fastball. If you can hit the fastball you can have a lot of success, no matter what league you play in."
The nightcap had a similar story of solid starting pitching and lots of runs, but only the teams were switched.
Edenton scored in every inning but the first and sixth, and in those innings they scored, they scored at least three runs every time. The Steamers scored four in the second, three in the third, fourth and fifth and another four in the seventh as they rolled to an 18-1 victory.
Trooper Reynolds had three hits, three RBI and four runs scored, Grant Tyndall drove in three runs with a hit and also scored twice, and Jake Placzek was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI from the leadoff spot.
Edenton had at least one hit from every player that had an at bat in the game, and all but Even Rogers scored at least once as well.
Morehead City used eight pitchers in the ballgame, the most they have used in a game this year, while Edenton used one - lefty Gunnar Kines, who improved to 3-1 after his seven-inning complete game in which he allowed just one run on five hits and struck out seven.
Morehead City is back in action tomorrow for another game against the Wilson Tobs, who they beat by a 16-2 score on Tuesday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
