MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins are happy to announce they are hosting the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team on Wednesday, June 27 at 7:05 p.m. at Big Rock Stadium.
The Marlins are honored to be just one of five collegiate baseball teams in the country the National Team plays during their summer tour, and all four teams are members of the Coastal Plain League. Team USA plays the Fayetteville SwampDogs tonight, the Wilmington Sharks tomorrow night and travel to Morehead City on Wednesday. The National Team plays its final game against Coastal Plain League competition on July 1 in Forest City, North Carolina against the Forest City Owls.
"It's a privilege to welcome Team USA to Morehead City and Big Rock Stadium," Marlins Owner Buddy Bengel said. "We expect a great turnout and it should be a fantastic night of baseball for Team USA, the Marlins and the community."
Team USA plays a 22-game schedule that includes games against the Cuban National Team in Cuba, the 18-and-under USA National Team and the Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Tournament hosted in Haarlem, The Netherlands that runs from July 14-22. The tournament will conclude the summer tour for Team USA.
The National Collegiate team is selected from a player pool that is primarily comprised of non-draft eligible college players. The team assembled on June 23 at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. in preparation for its 2012 summer season.
The Morehead City Marlins is a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
