HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Plain League announced today that Columbia's Ryan Gebhardt was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while Peninsula's Patrick Scoggin was honored as the Rawlings Pitcher of the Week for week four of action (June 18-June 24).
Gebhardt batted .458 for the Blowfish on the week. Of his league-best 11 hits, he had two doubles and a home run, while racking up a league-high seven RBIs to go with five runs scored. The sophomore from Louisiana Tech also led the league with 16 total bases, and added a slugging percentage of .667 and an on-base percentage of .481 to go with a stolen base.
On the mound, Scoggin pitched a gem for the Pilots on June 18 versus the Florence RedWolves. The 6-5, 230-pound junior right-hander from Virginia Tech pitched a complete game shutout, earning a perfect 0.00 ERA and 1-0 record on the week. In nine innings of work, Scoggin surrendered just two hits, walked none and struck out a league-best 12. Further, opposing batters hit just .069 against him, while he also sported a WHIP of 0.22.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
