Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors have agreed to terms with third-year forward Ryan Markham (MARK-um) for the 2007-08 season, head coach Marty Raymond announced Thursday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not announced.
Markham, 26, comes to Bakersfield after spending his first two pro seasons with the United Hockey League's Port Huron Flags.
Last year, he notched 28 points (16g, 12a) and 36 penalty minutes in 64 games for the Flags. During his rookie season of 2005-06, Markham recorded 16 points (7g, 9a) and 40 penalty minutes in 46 games. That year, his head coach was former Condor Paul Willett, and one of his teammates was current Condor Brett Lutes.
"Ryan is good centerman and his skills and smarts will certainly fit the bill," Raymond said. "He's a big man, good on faceoffs and is technically sound."
The 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound native of Houghton, Mich. is tied with Lutes for the all-time goal-scoring lead (23) in Port Huron's two-year existence.
"I'm looking forward to playing with Brett again," Markham said. "I've heard nothing but great things about Bakersfield and I'm excited to play for a winning team with a chance to win a championship."
Before turning pro, Markham played four years at Michigan Tech (2001-02 through 2004-05) where he netted 11 points (5g, 6a) and 18 penalty minutes in 82 games. Prior to that, he spent two seasons (1999-00 and 2000-01) playing juniors for the Waterloo Black Hawks.
With the addition of Markham, there are now 12 players inked for 2007-08, seven of whom are returnees from last season (Scott Balan, Sean Venedam, David Kudelka, Andrew Ianiero, Reagan Leslie, Lutes and Jamie Hodson). Markham, Mark Derlago, Tyler Noye, Eric Sonnenberg and Tamás Lencsés are the new players coming to Condorstown.
The Condors begin their 2007-08 10th Anniversary season Friday, Oct. 19. For more information or to reserve season tickets, mini-plans and book group outings contact the Condors office at 324-PUCK (7825).
