INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- Outfielder Mark Smith has been named the Indianapolis Indians Player of the Month for April and will receive a specially-designed commemorative watch from Windsor Jewelers prior to tonight's game.

Smith batted .338 and drove in 11 runs to lead the Indians in both offensive categories in April. The 33-year-old hit safely in 16 of the 18 games he played, and put together a team-high, six-game hitting streak from April 8-16. Smith also led the team with 22 base hits.

For the month, Smith slugged at a .477 clip and posted a .357 on-base percentage ranking second on the team in both categories. He scored eight runs, doubled three times and homered twice. In 65 at-bats, he struck out just six times.

Smith is in his 13th season as a professional after being a first-round draft pick of Baltimore in 1991. The California native has played seven seasons in the major leagues for Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Florida and Montreal hitting .243 in 381 games.

The Indians will select a player of the month each month from April-August. The winning player receives a special watch from Windsor Jewelers. At the end of the season, Windsor Jewelers will present the Indians Most Valuable Player with a championship-style diamond ring.
