Marino, Mallards Edge Rapid City 3-2
December 27, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (December 27, 2011) - Brandon Marino scored the Quad City Mallards' third power play goal of the game to break a 2-2 tie at 1:59 of the third period and the host Mallards went on to defeat the Rapid City Rush 3-2 Tuesday night. With the win, the Mallards moved out of a tie with Rapid City and into sole possession of third place in the Central Hockey League's Turner Conference and improved their record in the month of December to 9-2-1.
Marino- who also picked up an assist- buried Eric Giosa's centering pass from close range to snap the deadlock. Marino's goal stood up as the difference after Mallard goaltender David Brown (22 saves) and Rapid City netminder Tim Boron (40 saves) both made a series of superb saves over the following 18-plus minutes and the Mallards' survived a Rapid City power play in the final two minutes.
Marino's goal proved necessary for Quad City after the Rush used second period goals from Shawn Limpright and Mike Vaskivuo to erase a 2-0 Mallard lead. Limpright's close range bid was deflected home at 11:04; at 14:01, Vaskivuo's wrister from left wing circle evened the score.
The Mallards got the jump on Rapid City by converting a pair of first period man advantages. John Snowden's low drive from the high slot opened the scoring at 10:24 of the first. Justin Chwedoruk doubled the lead by snapping the puck in from the slot at the 15:40 mark.
Defenseman Justin Hofstetter picked up two assists for the Mallards Tuesday night after being activated from Central Hockey League leave earlier in the day. Hofstetter missed one game while on leave due to immigration issues.
The Mallards next play at home Friday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Dayton Gems. The first 1,000 fans through the doors for Friday night's game will receive free Mallards stocking caps courtesy of WQAD News 8.
