EVERETT, Wash. - The Seattle Mariners have named left-handed pitcher Anthony Fernandez and outfielder Kevin Rivers as the Short-Season Single-A Mariners Minor League Players of the Year. The announcement was made this afternoon in conjunction with the Minor League Players of the Year and Player Development Staff of the Year awards.

Fernandez, a 20-year-old left-handed pitcher from Santiago, Dominican Republic, went 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA for the Sox in 15 regular season starts. He finished the season by throwing four consecutive scoreless outings (25 IP), including two wins in the NWL Playoffs. Signed by the Mariners in 2006, Fernandez earned his second All-Star Team selection in 2010 as the best left-handed pitcher in the Northwest League. He also made the Arizona League Post-Season All-Star Team in 2009.

Rivers was selected as the Mariners Short-Season Minor League Player of the Year after finishing third in the NWL with a .332 batting average and leading the league in on-base percentage (.466). He was named NWL Player of the Week twice (6/21-27, 8/23-29), led the Sox in hits (80) and walks (60) and had a 14-game hitting streak to begin the season. A 22-year-old native of Bristol, Conn, Rivers was signed as a free agent in 2009

High Desert Mavericks first baseman Rich Poythress was named the overall Mariners Minor League Player of the Year, while right-hander Michael Pineda (West Tenn/Tacoma) was named Pitcher of the Year. Minor league hitting coordinator, Tacoma hitting coach and interim Tacoma manager Jose Castro was named the Player Development Staff Member of the Year.

The AquaSox won the 2010 NWL Championship last Sunday by defeating the Spokane Indians in a three-game NWL Final. Everett claims its first league title since 1985, when the team was known as the Everett Giants.
