
Marimon, Ventura Put up Zeroes in Carolina League Win

Wilmington, DE - Sugar Ray Marimon and Yordano Ventura were integral pieces in the Carolina League All-Star's 9-1 victory over the California League All-Stars on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, NC.
With the score at 1-1 at the end of three innings, Marimon was called on to pitch the fourth inning. He tossed a perfect frame, the only Carolina League pitcher to do so. He induced a flyout from C.J. Rutherford, struck out John Hicks and punched out Travis Witherspoon looking. Marimon was rendered the winning pitcher.
Ventura replaced Marimon in the fifth inning with the Carolina League All-Stars up 4-1. Cory Spangenberg grounded out to start the frame. Ventura then issued a walk to Rico Noel. With Billy Hamilton batting, Noel swiped second and third. The righty would navigate out of trouble after fanning Hamilton and getting Chris Owings to ground out to end the threat. Ventura received a hold.
Marimon has been Wilmington's best starting pitcher this season. He owns a 4-2 record with a 2.12 ERA in 14 games and nine starts. As of Wednesday morning, he is second in the league in ERA and batting average against with a .206 clip while ranking third with a 1.01 WHIP. He has worked 68.0 innings, allowing just 51 hits and 18 walks while striking out 60 hitters. Last season, the 23-year old was a mid-season Midwest League All-Star for Low-A Kane County. The Cartagena, Colombia, native was signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent on November 20, 2006
Ventura, the Royals' 10th-best prospect according to Baseball America, has lit up radar guns with ease this year, touching 100 MPH. Blessed with the "Best Fastball" in the Kansas City farm system according to the same publication, the flame-throwing righty has recorded a 3-5 record with a 3.10 ERA in 13 starts this season. As of Wednesday morning, his ERA checks in at seventh-best in the circuit. He is second in the league in strikeouts with 78, fourth in batting average against with a .227 mark and holds the top K/9 IP ratio in the league at 11.51. The 21-year old has surrendered just 52 hits in 61.0 innings this year. Born and raised in Samana, Dominican Republic, the 5-foot-11, 167-pounder was signed by the Royals as a non-drafted free agent on October 8, 2008.
