Portland Winterhawks News Release

Montreal, QC - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, are excited to share that defenseman Marek Alscher was selected by the Florida Panthers during the 2022 NHL Draft in Montreal.

The Panthers selected Alscher with the 93rd overall pick in the third round of the draft - the first selection of the day for the Presidents' Trophy winners after earlier trading away their first and second-round selections.

The big Czech blueliner is off to South Florida!

The Kladno, Czechia native recorded 16 points in 61 games during his first year in Portland. Highly regarded for his defensive play, Alscher led the Winterhawks to the fourth-best penalty kill percentage in the WHL during the 2021-22 regular season. Alscher also played for the Czech National Team at the under-16, under-17 and under-18 levels, most recently competing for his home country at the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup where he recorded one point in four tournament games.

Alscher becomes the third Winterhawk to be drafted by Florida all-time, joining former Memorial Cup Champion and Winterhawks captain Joey Tetarenko and two-time recipient of the Winterhawks Defensive Player of the Year award John Ludvig.

Alscher became the 146th Winterhawk to be selected at the NHL draft, a WHL all-time best, and marked the third consecutive season in which a Portland player was chosen during the NHL's annual event.
