Bradenton Marauders News Release
DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Marauders won the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 2-1, before dropping the nightcap, 4-0, to the Dunedin Blue Jays at TD Ballpark.
In the first game, the Marauders (1-1, 30-37) trailed, 1-0, entering the seventh inning. Brenden Dixon, however, led off with a walk off Geison Urbaez to put the tying run on base, and after a Rodolfo Nolasco strikeout, Deivis Nadal doubled Dixon to third. Jase Bowen then stepped to the plate in a pinch-hit scenario and lined a game-tying single to left field. Jasiah Dixon followed with a bunt single along the first base line, allowing Nadal to score the go-ahead run from third.
Yunior Thibo finished the game by striking out three in a scoreless ninth inning, working around a two-out hit-by-pitch.
Bradenton's Carlos Jimenez dueled with Blue Jays rehabbing lefty Anthony Kay and Urbaez, trading scoreless frames through the first three-and-a-half innings. Dunedin (1-1, 29-39) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the fourth on an Adriel Sotolongo RBI-double, and the 1-0 lead held until Bradenton's comeback in the seventh.
Jimenez finished with four strikeouts and no walks over five innings, scattering four hits.
The second game began in a similar fashion, as both teams once again remained scoreless through the first three-and-a-half innings. Sergio Umana tossed three hitless innings in a spot start for Bradenton, but Dunedin starter Dahian Santos matched him by stymying the Marauders. The Blue Jays jumped ahead in the fourth on an RBI-single by Sotolongo off Marauders reliever Sebastian Rodriguez, making his Single-A debut.
After managing just one hit in their first four innings, the Marauders mounted a threat in the top of the fifth. Grant Koch led off with a walk, took second base on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a Jasiah Dixon single. But after a popout by Angel Basabe, Dixon was caught on an attempted steal of second base, and Norkis Marcos struck out looking to end the inning, stranding the tying run on third. Marauders manager Jonathan Johnston was ejected by home plate umpire Chad Westlake after a disputed strike call by Westlake on a Marcos check swing earlier in the at-bat.
The bottom of the fifth brought more oddity. With two out and Angel del Rosario at third base for Dunedin, Roque Salinas hit a grounder to shortstop Deivis Nadal, who threw to first base in time to retire Salinas. But as the Marauders left the field, Blue Jays manager Donnie Murphy disputed the call, contending that first baseman Marcos had pulled his foot from the base, and a brief discussion between Westlake and base umpire Trey Ward resulted in a reversal of the call. The teams returned to the field, and Del Rosario, who was running on the two-out grounder, thus scored on the play after the call's reversal. Glenn Santiago promptly drove an 0-2 pitch from Carlos Lomeli over the left-field wall for a two-run homer, turning what initially appeared as a scoreless inning into a three-run frame for a 4-0 Dunedin lead.
After five scoreless innings on the mound by Santos, who fanned seven, the Marauders went on to strand a runner in a scoreless sixth against Nathanael Perez and were unable to score in the seventh, giving Dunedin the nightcap victory.
The Marauders seek a series win on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. at TD Ballpark. RHP Nick Frasso will start for the Blue Jays, while the Marauders have yet to announce their starter.
