Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, Fla. - A rocky start from starter Luis Peralta dug the Marauders an early hole Tuesday night in an eventual 9-3 loss to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels at LECOM Park.
Peralta (0-4) labored through his second-shortest start of the season for the Marauders (19-21), lasting just an inning and a third before being lifted. His counterpart, Fort Myers (26-13) starter Pierson Ohl (2-2), tossed five scoreless innings and earned the win, allowing just two baserunners via a single and a walk while striking out a career-high seven.
Bradenton managed five hits in the game, all singles, including two by Rodolfo Nolasco, who drove in each of the team's three runs for a season-high three RBI.
In the top of the first inning, Peralta allowed a one-out double to Fort Myers' Mikey Perez with two runners aboard. Noah Miller scored easily from second base for the game's first run, but left fielder Luke Brown delivered a strong throw to shortstop Mike Jarvis, whose relay throw home cut down Emmanuel Rodriguez attempting to score from first, keeping the Mighty Mussels' lead at 1-0.
But in the second, Peralta struggled. The left-hander allowed a leadoff triple to Keoni Cavaco, who quickly scored on a wild pitch. Peralta loaded the bases with one out after allowing two walks and a single and was lifted after walking Miller to force in a run. With the Marauders trailing, 3-0, Jake Sweeney entered in relief and allowed a two-run single to Rodriguez before retiring the next two batters to end the inning with Fort Myers in front, 5-0.
Sweeney would retire eight batters in a row after allowing the second-inning single, and the southpaw finished with three and one-third scoreless innings and a season-high five strikeouts.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Marauders loaded the bases against reliever Juan Mendez on three walks. Nolasco delivered a two-run single up the middle, bringing Bradenton within three runs, 5-2.
But the Marauders would come no closer, as the Mussels sent nine men to the plate in a four-run eighth inning against Bradenton relievers Wilkin Ramos and Darvin Garcia. Kala'i Rosario belted a two-run homer to left, and Miller lined a two-run single to cap the rally.
The Marauders grabbed their final run of the night in the home half on a soft single to right-center by Nolasco.
In the bottom of the ninth, Wyatt Hendrie delivered a one-out single to extend his on-base streak to 11 games but was erased on a game-ending double play grounder by Geovanny Planchart.
The series continues Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at LECOM Park. The Marauders have yet to announce their starting pitcher, while the Mighty Mussels will start RHP Mike Paredes (0-1, 2.66 ERA).
