Bradenton Marauders News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Missed run-scoring opportunities marred a tight game Sunday afternoon for the Marauders, who lost to the Clearwater Threshers, 3-2, at BayCare Ballpark.
The defeat handed the Marauders (15-9, 44-45) a series loss, denying the team of a third consecutive series win.
The Threshers (9-15, 44-45) plated the game's first two runs. Andrick Nava led off the bottom of the second inning with a double and scored on a Micah Yonamine single, and in the third, Erick Brito drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Marcus Lee Sang.
Po-Yu Chen rebounded on the mound for the Marauders after the rocky start, lasting through five innings and retiring nine of his last ten batters faced.
A Threshers bullpen day saw eight different pitchers toe the rubber, including rehabbing right-handers Sam Coonrod and Cam Bedrosian, who each tossed one scoreless inning. Clearwater maintained its 2-0 lead as the Marauders struggled to drive runners home. Bradenton stranded five baserunners over their first five innings, including leaving Juan Jerez at third base after a leadoff triple in the fourth inning.
Bradenton finally broke through in the seventh against right-hander Konnor Ash. A Deivis Nadal bunt single and walks by Grant Koch and Norkis Marcos loaded the bases with one out for Tsung-Che Cheng, who pulled a groundball single into right field, plating two runs to tie the game. A Jase Bowen popout and a Jerez strikeout, however, left Marcos and Cheng stranded in scoring position, and the game remained tied, 2-2.
In the top of the eighth, the Marauders were unable to take advantage of another triple, this time squandering a two-out three-bagger by Angel Basabe.
Bradenton relivers Jack Hartman and Yunior Thibo had held Clearwater scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, but when Thibo returned to pitch the eighth, a leadoff triple by Wilfredo Flores stung the Marauders, as Hao Yu Lee drove Flores home with the go-ahead run on a single to center field.
In the top of the ninth, Norkis Marcos delivered a leadoff single to left field off left-hander Gabriel Yanez, placing the tying run on base for the Marauders, but Cheng grounded into a double play and Bowen flied out to right field, ending the game.
The Marauders return home to LECOM Park on Tuesday to open a six-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Single-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
