Bradenton Marauders News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - After producing a first-inning lead Friday night, Marauders pitching struggled through lengthy innings and watched Clearwater bats rake through numerous rallies in an 18-4 Bradenton loss at BayCare Ballpark.

The loss, along with a Jupiter Hammerheads win over Daytona, denied the Marauders (68-43) the chance to clinch the league's final postseason berth on Friday.

Jack Herman gave Bradenton an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning off Rodolfo Sanchez, then made a running catch of a Casey Martin line drive to left field in the bottom half, stranding two Threshers (49-59) runners and preserving a scoreless inning for Jared Jones.

But after escaping the first-inning jam, Jones struggled. After throwing a 22-pitch first inning, Jones pushed through several long plate appearances in the second. A seven-pitch flyout opened the inning, and after a hit-by-pitch and a flyout, Jones allowed an infield single to Chris Burke on a nine-pitch battle. Another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Jones walked Ethan Wilson to force home Clearwater's first run. Kendall Simmons followed with a game-tying two-run single, and Jones was lifted in favor of Sergio Umana, who surrendered a go-ahead two-run single to Jared Carr, giving Clearwater a 5-3 lead.

The Threshers piled on five more runs in the third against Umana, sending nine men to the plate for a second straight inning. Clearwater plated four more runs in the fourth against Eddy Yean, batting through the order for a third straight inning and building their lead to 14-3.

Clearwater capped its scoring with a Chris Burke RBI-double in the fifth and a Casey Martin three-run homer in the eighth inning. The Marauders' only run after the first inning came on a Jase Bowen RBI-double in the fifth.

The Marauders used six pitchers on the night: Jones, Umana, Yean, Oliver Mateo, Tyler Samaniego, and Kyle Wilkie. Samaniego was the lone Marauders hurler not to allow a run, pitching a scoreless sixth. Wilkie, in his third pitching appearance of the season, pitched the final two innings of the blowout and allowed Martin's three-run homer.

Clearwater went 9-for-20 with runners in scoring position. The Marauders went just 2-for-10 with RISP and stranded 12 runners.

Alex McKenney (2-1) earned the win in relief for the Threshers, allowing just one unearned run over 3.2 innings. Maikel Garrido held Bradenton scoreless over 2.1 innings to finish.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at BayCare Ballpark. RHP Logan Hofmann is scheduled to start for the Marauders against LHP Gabriel Cotto for the Threshers.
