St. George RoadRunners News Release

RENO - In a game that progressed at a furious pace, the visiting St. George RoadRunners never trailed en route to a 4-1 victory over the Reno Silver Sox on Tuesday night.

St. George starter Monte Mansfield fell two outs short of a complete game scattering four hits and an earned run over 8.1 innings. Mansfield struck out eight to notch his seventh win of the year (7-2, 5-2 with STG).

Reno starter Andrew Alvarado battled Mansfield to a scoreless tie through the first six innings.

Alvarado surrendered the lead in the seventh. Greg Lemon tripled off the top of the wall to lead off the inning. Seth Loman was intentionally walked to get to Angel Sanchez. On a 1-2 pitch, Sanchez flied to right scoring Lemon from third. Alvarado (1-2) would exit after seven frames allowing just one run on five hits.

Reno reliever Grant Ledbetter pitched a scoreless eighth, but fell victim to the classic baseball philosophy blunder in the ninth. Lemon walked and advanced to second on an Eddy Garabito ground out. Reno decided to once again intentionally walk Loman to set-up a potential double play with Sanchez at the plate. On the third pitch, a fastball, Sanchez launched a homer to left-center to pad the RoadRunner lead to four.

Mansfield started the bottom of the ninth working on a two-hit shutout. After retiring Ben Wharton, Reno CF Gary Harris wiped away the shutout with a solo home run to right, his 11th of the season. Andre Alvarado doubled over the glove of Ryan Stevenson in right-center and John Hattig drew a walk to end Mansfield's night. Jason Norderum took the mound with Matt Kavanaugh, the potential tying run, at the dish. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Kavanaugh hit a sharp grounder to Norderum who flipped to Liu Rodriguez at second for the first out and a beautiful transition throw to Ivan Reyes at first completed the game-ending double play. Norderum wrapped up his fifth save facing one batter.

The RoadRunners had seven hits - Lemon, Loman and catcher Dustin Hicks each had two - to improve to 22-17 in the GBL South 2nd Half. Reno had four hits in dropping their ninth straight game in a row (11-27 record in second half).

Game three of the four-game series is Wednesday night from Peccole Park. St. George will start two-game winner Gregorio Martinez (2-0, 3.00).
