Manitoba Moose Recap: Manitoba 3 at Iowa 1
October 14, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (1-0-0) and Iowa Wild (0-1-0) kicked off the 81st season of the American Hockey League in Des Moines, IA on Friday night. Much like their pre-season contests a week ago, the first period ended with a scoreless deadlock. Eric Comrie was key in keeping Iowa off the board, making 13 saves in the period. Both teams enjoyed a powerplay opportunity, but couldn't capitalize on their chances.
The tie didn't last long into the second as Nelson Nogier's point shot found its way to the back of the Iowa net at the 2:46 mark. The Moose kept up the pressure following the goal and nearly made it 2-0, but Andrew Copp's shot from the slot rang off the crossbar. The Wild pulled themselves even at 8:51 of the period. Gustav Olofsson tipped a Scott Czarnowczan shot past Comrie for the goal. Manitoba regained its lead late in the period when Quinton Howden picked up his first as a Moose. The Oak Bank, MB native pounced on a Jack Roslovic rebound for the go-ahead goal with 3:03 left in the period. Comrie kept it 2-1 when he made a brilliant, sprawling glove save to rob the Wild of a goal and send the Moose to the third with a lead.
The 2-1 score held until the Moose powerplay was able to provide some insurance. With Manitoba on a five-on-three powerplay, Roslovic accepted a pass down low from Nic Petan and proceeded to pick the short-side corner over Alex Stalock's shoulder. The 3-1 goal came with five minutes remaining in the third. Iowa called Stalock to the bench with just under three minutes left in the game, but couldn't cut into the Manitoba lead. Eric Comrie turned aside 28 of 29 shots, backstopping the Moose to a 3-1 opening night win.
