Manchester Rolls Over Rainmen
November 17, 2007 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Saint John Riptide News Release
The Manchester Millrats of the American Basketball Association (ABA) rolled over the visiting 1-0 Halifax Rainmen by a score of 124-99.
The Rainmen were confident having defeated the Boston Blizzard 136-103 on Thursday night in their home opener. That confidence began to wane once the game got underway as the Millrats jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the first quarter. Rob Sanders slammed home a two handed jam midway in the first. 6'11 center Souleymane Wane did damage early on a turnaround jumper and then a jump hook.
But Halifax responded with an 8-0 run capped off by Jermaine Anderson's long jumpshot off the break. A 3D steal and foul drawn by the Millrats' Stacey Moragne resulted in two of three free throws and a 36-30 lead for the home team at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The second quarter action was back and forth; David Cooper jammed home an errant shot with a two hands and the Millrats led 40-38. The Rainmen hung tough. A three pointer gave Halifax a short lived lead at 43-42. The score at halftime was 57-52 Millrats margin.
In the third quarter, Manchester blew the game open. A three pointer by Rashid Al-Kaleem pushed the lead to double figures (71-61). Then a rebound and coast to coast lay in by Player of the Game, John Huggins, extended the Millrats to a 16 point cushion. The third quarter ended with the Millrats ahead 91-73.
A three pointer by John Huggins made the score 111-82 with 4:42 remaining in the game, and the Rainmen never challenged again.
2007 ABA All Star Rob Sanders led the way for the Millrats with 24 points, John Huggins added 22 from the perimeter, and Ismael Caro scored 18. Devino Williams led the Rainmen with 26 points. Manchester improves to 2-0 on the season while Halifax drops to 1-1.
Up next for the Millrats are the Quebec Kebs tomorrow night in Canada, as the Millrats go on their first road trip. The Millats face the Rainmen in two back to back rematches next Thursday and Friday night in Nova Scotia. The next home game for the Millrats is next Sunday at 4:35 pm versus the Montreal Royal in the 'Fieldhouse' on the campus of Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, NH.
