Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah Sand Gnats Manager Tim Teufel earned his 200th minor league victory Tuesday night as the Gnats scored a season-high 11 runs en route to an 11-4 victory over Charleston. Gnats designated hitter D.J. Wabick became the sixth Sand Gnat this season to collect four hits in a game as he went 4-for-5 and finished a triple shy of the cycle.

The Gnats have had RiverDogs starting pitcher Ivan Nova's number all season long, and it was no different Tuesday night. Savannah exploded for six runs in the second inning, tying a season-high for runs scored in an inning. They sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and scored six runs on six hits to open the scoring.

Savannah continued to pour it on as they scored at least one run in each of the next four innings. Charleston made it as close as 7-3 in the fourth but inched no closer. Leadoff man Hector Pellot went 2-for-5 and hit a two-run home run deep into the left field bleachers in the fifth inning off of reliever Luke Trubee. As a team, the Gnats collected a total of five extra base hits with two doubles, two home runs and a triple.

Starting pitcher Matt Durkin cruised through the first two innings but ran into a bit of a jam in the third. He escaped with just one run crossing the plate and started the fourth inning by striking out 'Dogs catcher Kyle Anson. After walking Eduardo Nunez, Durkin was forced to leave the game with a blister on his right thumb. Jeramy Simmons (1-0) took over from there and picked up the win.

The Gnats have Wednesday off before starting a two-game series in Charleston on Thursday. The next home game for Savannah will be Saturday against the Columbus Catfish at 7:05 p.m. It's ATT&T REAL Yellow Pages Night with a Sand Gnats bandana to the first 1,000 fans.
