Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - When the Potomac Nationals take the field today for their doubleheader with the Wilmington Blue Rocks, both clubs will be part of a historic day for both the organization and the man in charge of their ballclub.
Manager Trent Jewett will be seeking his 1,000 career victory as a minor league manager and will achieve this milestone with at least one win in today's doubleheader. Jewett took over the Potomac Nationals after the team's 2008 run to the Carolina League championship, making the P-Nats the eighth different team in which Jewett has been placed at the helm.
Throughout his 16-year managerial career, Jewett has skippered the Carolina Mudcats to the Southern League championship in 1995, and also appeared in both the Pacific Coast League and International League championships with the Nashville Sounds and the Indianapolis Indians respectively.
His extended tenure throughout the Minor League ranks has left Jewett with a record that is nothing short of staggering in its rarity. With the P-Nats 10-9 mark this season, Jewett's overall record currently stands at 999-999, a statistical anomaly that puts Jewett in select company.
The all-time record holder for Minor League wins as a manager is Stan Wasiak, who compiled a 2,530-2,314 record over 37 seasons from 1950-1986.
Jewett began his coaching career in 1992 with the Welland Pirates of the New York-Penn League and consistently climbed up Pittsburgh's organizational ladder, eventually landing with their Triple-A club, the Calgary Cannons, in 1996 and sticking with the team as they moved to Nashville and eventually Indianapolis where they remain to this day.
Jewett's time with Nashville was interrupted in June of 2000 when the Pirates promoted him to third base coach for the Major League club where he stayed through the 2002 season only to return to the Triple-A managerial ranks in 2003.
The P-Nats will take part in a doubleheader at Pfitzner Stadium on Thursday with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 ET. Lefty Tom Milone will toe the rubber for the P-Nats as it is sure to be an unforgettable night here in Woodbridge.
