Mammoth Win in New Jersey

March 23, 2003 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release

East Rutherford, NJ - The final point total separating the Colorado Mammoth and New Jersey Storm couldn't have been any smaller Sunday afternoon, but the win couldn't have been any bigger.

The Colorado Mammoth (6-7) won its first road game of the season 18-17 over the New Jersey Storm (3-10), and it wasn't a moment too soon. A loss to the New Jersey Storm would've given the Philadelphia Wings the National Lacrosse League's Eastern Division Championship and eliminated the Mammoth from playoff contention. That championship - and an automatic playoff berth - is still up for grabs.

Mammoth team captain Gary Gait is approaching the National Lacrosse League's goals per season record he set in 1998 - 57 goals in that season. Gait paced the Mammoth Sunday with six goals and one assist bringing his current season total to 52. He has scored 22 goals in the past four games, including six goals in both of the past two games. This month, Gait has twice been named the NLL's Overall Player of the Week.

"This was literally a must-win game and the guys came together and did what it took," said Steve Govett, Colorado Mammoth president and general manager. "We played a close game against the Storm earlier in the season so we knew this was going to be tough." The Mammoth beat the Storm 16-14 February 8 at Pepsi Center.

The Mammoth led by three points as the first half closed.

Injuries have sidelined Rory Graham for the majority of the season, but Graham came roaring back Sunday, scoring twice in his first game with the Mammoth.

Tom Still played in goal for the majority of the game, making 34 saves.

Scoring for the Storm was led by Scott Stewart (4G, 3A). The Storm's Marc Morley and Blake Miller added hat tricks.

A late fourth quarter rally by the Storm - three goals in the final two minutes brought the score to within a single point, but the Mammoth held on with the final 18-17. Announced attendance at the Continental Airlines Arena was 6,287.

The Mammoth plays its last home game of the regular season this Friday (3/28). It's Fan Appreciation Night, with the first 10,000 fans receiving a free Gary Gait poster. Single game tickets start at just $5.
