Mammoth Weathers the Storm

Denver, Colo. - A go-ahead goal from local school teacher Brian Langtry capped a stunning Colorado Mammoth comeback tonight at Pepsi Center as the Mammoth beat the New Jersey Storm 16-14 and kept the team unbeaten at home (4-0).

In spite of having the flu, goalie Erik Miller played the majority of the game, recording 27 saves. Miller's performance brought the team back from a 5-0 deficit, following Tom Still's turn in goal.

The Mammoth was held scoreless for 11:22 in the first quarter until team captain Gary Gait scored his first of three goals for the night. Gait led the team in points with three goals and four assists.

At the end of the half the Mammoth trailed 9-3.

"We made the adjustments we needed to during the half-time break," said coach Rod Jensen. "We opened up the field and the guys came together as a group."

The third quarter saw the Mammoth outscore the Storm 7-2 on goals by Del Halladay (2), Tom Phair, Kevin Stewardson, Ben Prepchuk and Fred Jenner (2).

Gait opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. 29 seconds later, Gait assisted on a goal by Tom Phair to tie the game. Langtry's goal was unassisted and gave the Mammoth its first lead of the night.

An assist by Al Truant to Ben Prepchuk gave Prepchuk his third goal of the night.

An empty-net goal by Josh Sims with 42 seconds left in the game gave the Mammoth the two-point victory.

Leading scorers for the Storm with five points each were Marc Morley (4g, 1a) and Roy Colsey (2g, 3a). The NLL's only female goalie, the Storm's Ginny Capicchioni, did not play.

The victory keeps the Mammoth (4-3) at the top of the National Lacrosse League's Eastern Division.

Attendance at tonight's game was 14,735.

The Mammoth plays again next Friday night (2/14) at Pepsi Center.
