DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth released its protected player list on Thursday, designating the 14 players who will not be eligible for the National Lacrosse League expansion draft.

Among the Mammoth's protected players are forwards Gavin Prout, Brian Langtry and Dan Stroup, defensemen Jamie Hanford, Jay Jalbert and Dave Stilley, and goaltender Gee Nash.

"It's very difficult to leave any of our players unprotected, but we feel that we've done our best to keep our core group together," Mammoth general manager Steve Govett said.

The expansion draft, held via conference call at 2 p.m. on July 13, will consist of nine rounds. The league's two new entries, the Edmonton Rush and Portland, Ore. (to be named), will each select up to nine unprotected players from the league's current teams. Portland, which received the first pick by winning a coin flip earlier this month, will select first in each round.

Each team was allowed to protect 13 runners and one goaltender, or 10 runners and two goaltenders. Seven of the nine teams elected to protect 13 runners and one goaltender. Minnesota and San Jose opted to protect two goaltenders and 10 runners.

Once a player is selected in the expansion draft, his team's general manager can then protect an additional player who was previously available. Once a team has had two of its unprotected players selected, the remaining players on that team's list are no longer available for selection.
