Colorado Mammoth News Release

DENVER - The Colorado Mammoth defeated the Portland LumberJax 12-10 in National Lacrosse League action Friday night at Rose Garden in Portland. It was the regular season opener for the Mammoth, which pushed its record to 1-0. The LumberJax fall to 0-2 following their second consecutive loss to open the 2009 campaign.

Colorado forward Brian Langtry led the way early with four goals in the first quarter. The leading goal scorer for the Mammoth in 2008, Langtry didn't waste much time getting his team on the board, scoring his first goal just over a minute into the game. Following a LumberJax goal to answer just 20 seconds later, Langtry ripped off three consecutive goals to put Colorado up 4-1 toward the end of the first quarter. Langtry would add another goal in the third quarter and finish the night with five goals and an assist.

Colorado dominated much of the first half, boasting leads of three and four goals in the first two periods. Portland fought back with three consecutive goals to close out the second quarter and cut the lead to 7-6 at halftime. A Cory Conway goal actually gave the LumberJax the lead 8-7 nearly three minutes into the third quarter, but then Colorado made their move. The Mammoth scored five of the game's next six goals to take the lead for good. A Nick Carlson goal with five minutes remaining gave the Mammoth a three-goal lead at 12-9 and the night was all but over.

Colorado head coach Bob McMahon was pleased with his team's effort in its first outing of the season. "Anytime you can open the season on the road with a big win against a division rival you're happy. We played really well at times tonight, but still have some things to work on as well. We'll get back home tomorrow and hopefully play even a little better for our fans in Denver tomorrow night."

In support of Langtry's six point night, Colorado was led by Captain Gavin Prout's two goals and four assists. Fellow forward Dan Carey chipped in with three assists for Colorado, which ended the night with 47 shots on goal.

Portland was led in scoring by Cory Conway. His six point night included a trio each of goals and assists. Peter Morgan added three goals and an assist, while star Brodie Merrill was held to just one goal and two assists.

The Mammoth opens its home schedule tomorrow evening, Saturday, January 10, as the same two teams face off at Pepsi Center for their second of three meetings this year. Tickets for all Mammoth home games are on sale now at the Pepsi Center box office, all Ticketmaster retail centers, online at Ticketmaster.com and by phone at 303.830.TIXS or 719.520.9090.
