Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, January 9, 2009 - Portland LumberJax forward Cory Conway scored a career-high three goals, tied a career-high with three assists and scored a career-high six points, but it went to no avail as the visiting Colorado Mammoth beat the Jax 12-10 on Friday night in front of 6,859 at the Rose Garden Arena.

Colorado struck first in the game, but Portland evened things up with 13:34 left in the first quarter as defenseman Richard Morgan stole the ball and went the length of the floor to tie the game at one. After two Mammoth goals, the Jax struck again as Conway snuck through the Colorado defense and scored with 2:28 left in the quarter. Forward Peter Morgan (3 goals, 1 assist) and defenseman Brodie Merrill (1 goal, 2 assists) were credited with assists on the short handed goal to make it 4-2 in favor of the visiting team.

The Jax would add another goal before the quarter ended as forward Dan Stroup scored with 43.2 seconds left to cut the Colorado lead to 4-3 after one quarter of play.

The Mammoth opened the quarter with three straight goals before Portland trimmed the lead to 7-4. In transition, forward Scott Stewart hit a streaking P. Morgan, who beat Mammoth goalie Gee Nash with 6:54 left. Nine seconds later the scoring continued for Portland as P. Morgan scored off assists from defenseman Tyler Codron and forward Tim Campeau.

Mystified, Mammoth Head Coach Bob McMahon threw the challenge flag, believing P. Morgan was in the crease when he shot. His challenge was denied and P. Morgan's goal stood.

Portland scored its third straight goal with 3:36 left in the half as Conway scored off the power play to cut the Mammoth lead to 7-6 at the half.

The Jax continued their run, tying the game at seven and scoring their fourth straight goal as P. Morgan scored off a pass from forward Peter Jacobs (1 goal, 1 assist) with 13:59 left in the third quarter to tie the game for the first time since the opening face-off.

Then, Portland took its first lead of the game with 12:09 left in the quarter as Conway beta Nash to make it 8-7 in favor of the home team. Merrill and forward Derek Malawsky (3 assists) tallied assists on the Conway's third goal of the game.

Once again, the Mammoth countered with their own run. Colorado would score the next two goals to take a 9-8 lead into the fourth quarter. Then, the Mammoth opened the fourth quarter with a goal before Portland cut the lead to 10-9. Jacobs scored with 11:50 to go off passes from Conway and forward Ryan Powell (3 assists).

Portland would add a late goal from P. Morgan with 3:30 to play, but the Mammoth would pull out the eventual 12-10 victory. The Jax return to action tomorrow evening when they play the Mammoth at 6 p.m. at the Pepsi Center. All NLL games will be streamed FREE this season as part of the NLL Network.
