
Mallards Use Strong Third to Bury Trashers

Moline, IL-The Mallards scored twice in the third period to secure a 3-1 win over the expansion Danbury Trashers. Paul Cabana and Brad Essex each scored their first Mallards markers in the third as the team improved to 5-4-0 on the season. Rookie goaltender Robert Gherson recorded his first pro win after stopping 28 of 29 Danbury shots.
In the first, the team exchanged goals as Brent Gretzky scored for Danbury on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Trashers a 1-0 lead. Greg Barber answered Gretzky's marker with a power-play goal of his own to knot the score at one.
After a scoreless second, Cabana and Essex each recorded third period markers. With the win, the Mallards improve to 4-1-0 in their last five. Mike Kompon had three helpers in the win to earn first star honors in front of a crowd of 4,647.
The Mallards are back at home tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. It's Family Fun-Day Sunday as the Mallards play host to the Rockford IceHogs. The game is preceded by a public skate from 1:15 p.m.-2 p.m. Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Born on Date Chevrolet will be on hand throughout the game. Earnhardt drove the car to victory at the Daytona 500.
