BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Jamie Carroll scored one goal and added two assists as the Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell to the host Bloomington PrairieThunder 5-2 Friday night.
The PrairieThunder overturned a 1-0 second period deficit by scoring a pair of goals just under four minutes apart. Matt Spiller's drive from the high slot broke off Mallard goaltender Jerad Kaufmann in a crowded goalmouth and just in over the goal line to even the score at 12:34 of the second. At the 16:31 mark, Bloomington took a 2-1 lead when Carroll pounced on a loose puck on the doorstep.
The Thunder stretched the lead to 3-1 while on the power play when Craig MacDonald fired a slapshot home from the right wing circle at 5:12 of third period. Jason Lepine made it four straight Bloomington goals by burying a rebound at 8:58 of the third.
After the Mallards pulled Kaufmann for an extra attacker with better than eight minutes remaining at the start of a power play, Justin White's wrist shot from the right wing circle cut the PrairieThunder lead to 4-2 at 13:05 of the third. The Mallards again emptied the net while on the advantage late in the third, but this time the Thunder benefited as Zach Pearson sealed the win with two minutes left by driving the puck into the gaping Quad City net.
The Mallards had opened the scoring when Jason Goulet's drive from the right point was deflected in at 17:43 of the first period.
The Mallards return home tomorrow evening at 7:05 p.m. to take on the Fort Wayne Komets. Cash prizes totaling $1,000 will be given away with random hot dogs from i wireless Center concession stands during the Saturday night's game.
Tickets for tomorrow night's game and all remaining regular season Mallards home games are available at the i wireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000.
