Mallards Face Evansville in Ice Breaker Opener this Afternoon

October 15, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League will play the first of their two preseason games- and the opener of this weekend's Ice Breaker- this afternoon at 4:05 p.m. at the i wireless Center

Moline resident Zach Honert will suit up and play for the Mallards today courtesy of Dwyer & Michaels and 97X. While Honert prepares to step onto the ice for the Flock, Aaron Schwartz exits the scene. The Mallards announced today that the defenseman has been waived.

Honert, 22, seized the opportunity presented by Dwyer & Michaels last week for one Quad Citian to play in today's game. After first surviving an open tryout held Sunday at the i wireless Center, Honert was then informed Tuesday on the Dwyer & Michaels Show by Mallards coach and general manager David Bell that he had been chosen from among five finalists to suit up for the Flock. Dwyer & Michaels are heard weekday mornings from 5:30 to 10:00 a.m. on 97X in the Quad Cities and online at 2dorks.com.

Schwartz, 26, arrived at training camp on a tryout agreement after brief stints last season in the Federal and All-American Hockey Leagues.

The Mallards' match-up this afternoon with the IceMen is the first of two Ice Breaker tilts today at the i wireless Center and the first of two exhibition games in as many days for the Flock. The Bloomington Blaze and Evansville IceMen will meet after the conclusion of the Flock's tussle with Evansville in the back end of today's doubleheader. The Ice Breaker will wrap up tomorrow when the Mallards take the ice along with the Mavericks for an open practice at 12:30 p.m. and a preseason game at 2:00 p.m.

The Mallards will open their second CHL regular season on home ice next Saturday night against the Rapid City Rush. Opening night will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with a Fan Fest outside the i wireless Center featuring Kiss tribute band Strutter, kids' activities, food and beverages and more. The Mallards' curtain raiser against Rapid City will follow at 7:05 p.m. Admission to Fan Fest is free with the purchase of a ticket to the opener.

Opening night is the first of the Mallards' 33 home games and 25 weekend dates. 2011-12 season tickets are still on sale- season ticket holders receive significant savings and a host of exclusive benefits. Single game tickets for all of the Mallards' regular season contests- including the opener- are also now on available. Fans can contact the Mallards at (309) 277-1364 or tickets@myqcmallards.com for more information about both season and single game tickets.

Single game tickets are also available at the i wireless Center box office, at Ticketmaster outlets, through www.ticketmaster.com or through Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free. The box office is open weekdays from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and on game days other than Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the second period. On Sundays on which the Mallards play at home the ticket office will be open from 1:00 p.m. until the start of the second period. Individual game tickets will be available for $12 in the upper level and $17 in the lower level.
