Mallards Clinch Playoff Berth with 5-2 Win Over Rockford

Moline, IL- The Mallards beat Rockford 5-2 at The MARK on Wednesday on the strength of a pair of Mike Kompon power-play goals and solo markers from Dave Stewart, A.J. MacLean and Troy Smith. The win, coupled with a Flint shootout loss, clinches a UHL playoff berth for the Mallards. The team will now work to overtake Missouri for the seventh seed. Entering the season's final weekend, the Mallards trail Missouri by just one point with three games left for both teams.

Dave Stewart started the scoring by tallying on a goal mouth scramble just 2:56 into the game. With the goal, Stewart set a new career high for goals in a season with seven. The forward's tally held up as the only goal of the first period as the Mallards carried a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

In the second period, Terry Harrison scored for Rockford to tie the game before the Mallards roared back with four unanswered goals. Mike Kompon regained the Mallards lead with his first goal of the night on a power play at the 9:43 mark of the period. Just eight seconds later, A.J. MacLean scored his 12th of the season to extend the Quad City lead to 3-1. Kompon would add another power-play marker at the 13:57 mark of the middle period. Troy Smith scored his seventh goal with just five seconds left in the period to give Quad City a 5-1 lead.

Rockford's Reid Simpson scored the only goal of the third to set the final at 5-2.

In earning his 24th win of the season, Quad City's Robert Gherson stopped 26 Rockford shots. The rookie is now 2-0-1 in April with a 2.33 goals against average.

On Saturday, the Mallards host Fort Wayne on Hall of Fame Night. Paul MacLean and Hugo Proulx will be inducted as the inaugural class on this historic night. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

The Mallards close out the regular season on Sunday vs. the Flint Generals. Posters will be given away to children courtesy of Maid Rite, Reynolds Ford and KWQC.
