Mallards Battle Back to Earn Point But Fall to Allen in Shootout

November 9, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

MOLINE, Ill. - John Murray made 45 saves and the host Quad City Mallards erased a 3-0 deficit late in the third period- a comeback than culminated in the Mallards' Mickey Lang tying the score with just 15.1 seconds left in regulation- only to fall to the Allen Americans 4-3 in a shootout Friday night after Allen's Brett Skinner completed a hat trick by converting the deciding penalty shot. The Mallards did earn one point for the shootout loss.

Skinner, who had twice scored on the power play in regulation, capped of f his three goal evening by snapping a 1-1 tie in the shootout. Scotty Howes set the stage for Skinner by evening the shootout at one apiece after Obi Aduba had scored with the Mallards' first penalty shot.

The game only went to overtime and, as it would prove, the shootout, after the Mallards pulled off their remarkable rally. Quad City scored three times in the final six minutes and fifty-five seconds of regulation- with two of those three goals coming shorthanded. Lang capped off the late flurry moments after Quad City was called for too many men on the ice by scoring shorthanded from the slot at 19:44 of the third after Murray had been pulled for an extra attacker. Jeremy Boyer- on a shorthanded breakaway assisted by Lang at 13:05- and Mike Stinziani- on the power play off a Shayne Toporowoski centering feed at 17:22- stunningly scored the goals that narrowed the gap to 3-2 and enabled Lang to pop up for the late equalizer.

Up until the dramatic final minutes of regulation, it seemed as if the Americans were cruising toward a regulation win. Anthony Maiani tipped in Brian McMillin's shot to give Allen a 1-0 lead at 7:54 of the first period. Skinner's one timer doubled the lead at 6:03 of the second period. The gap stretched to 3-0 when Skinner scored from the blue line at 4:14 of the third period, but the Americans would secure victory only after the wildest of finishes saw the Mallards grab a precious point for themselves.
