Mallards Add Matt Libby

Moline, IL – Defenseman Matt Libby is expected to join the Quad City Mallards for tonight's game against the Adirondack IceHawks, after being assigned by the American Hockey League's Portland Pirates, a Mallards affiliate. Quad City President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today.

Libby, a 25-year-old, 6'1", 205 lb. native of Saco, Maine, is in his third pro season. With the Pirates this season, he has played 27 games and accumulated three points on a goal and two assists, along with a –2 plus/minus rating. He spent all of last season with Portland but missed 33 games from late December to early March due to injury. In 44 games, he earned 12 assists and a +6 plus/minus rating. He also played in three post-season contests.

In his rookie season of 2001-02, Libby earned callups from the ECHL's Trenton Titans to three AHL teams – the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, Syracuse Crunch, and Saint John Flames. In 49 games with Trenton, he scored 28 points, on seven goals and 21 assists, to go with a +7 plus/minus rating. He was injured near the end of the regular season and was unable to participate in the playoffs.

Libby played four seasons at Providence College and led Friars defensemen in scoring in his senior year of 2000-01. He ranked third on the team in goals, assists, and points, and was named second team All-Hockey East. Prior to college, he played the 1996-97 season with the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League.

The Mallards play tonight and tomorrow in Glens Falls, NY, against the IceHawks. Both games begin at 6:35 p.m. (Central time), with the pre-game show on Fox Sports Radio 1230 (WFXN-AM) and www.qcmallards.com getting underway at 6:05 p.m. The road trip continues with a Sunday 4:05 p.m. contest at Port Huron.
