Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - Jeff Malcolm continued his dominance on Thursday, making 37 saves on 38 shots, as the Greenville Road Warriors (12-9-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, topped the Orlando Solar Bears (11-9-2-0) at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena, 4-1.
Malcolm has now won 10 of his last 13 starts overall and is a perfect 5-0-0 with a 1.38 goals against average and .953 save percentage at SANDLAPPER Securities Rink this season. The Road Warriors also improved to 5-1-0 on home ice and lead the league with a .833 win percentage at home.
In addition, Chris McCarthy notched his first professional multi-goal game with the first and last tallies of the contest.
After back-and-forth start to the first 20 minutes, the Road Warriors jumped on the board at 18:26 of the first period courtesy of Chris McCarthy. From behind the net, McCarthy controlled the puck and skated through the left circle before firing a wrist shot past goaltender Kent Patterson from between the circles. It was McCarthy's third goal of the season.
Greenville extended its lead just 46 seconds into the middle frame when Ben Power carried the puck to the front of the net with a head of stream, which drew Patterson out of position. Unable to convert, the puck was cleared away from the goal mouth, but not out as Sean Escobedo ripped a slap shot inches in front of the blue line and into an open net. It was Escobedo's first goal with Greenville.
Emerson Clark made it 3-0 late in the second period when he tapped home a loose puck that fell behind Patterson while making a save. Clark's goal, which came at the 16:09 mark, was his seventh of the season, which ties him for the team-lead with Vinny Saponari.
Orlando notched its only goal on the power play at 17:49 of the third period courtesy of Denver Manderson. Following a bench minor for too many men on the ice, Mickey Lang sent a pass to the top of the left circle where Manderson unleased a one-timer that beat Malcolm top-shelf. It was Manderson's ninth goal and 26th point this season, which ties him with teammate Greg Miller for second in the league's scoring race.
McCarthy sealed the deal with an empty netter and his second goal of the contest at 18:43 of the third.
The contest saw just two penalty minutes, both against Greenville. It was the first time this season the Road Warriors went an entire game without a power play chance.
Orlando outshot Greenville 38-37.
