Majors win wild one

November 13, 2009 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Sudbury, ON- The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors started their weekend road trip the right way, with a 6-5 win over the Sudbury Wolves via the shootout at the Sudbury Community Centre tonight. The win improves Mississauga to 16-4-1-0 on the season and puts them in sole possession of first place in the Central Division and in the Eastern Conference.

The Majors began the first period uncharacteristically flat, allowing Sudbury to grab a 2-0 lead within the opening ten minutes of the first period. John Kurtz opened the scoring, and Peter Hemenegildo ripped a shot, top corner past Majors Goaltender Chris Carrozzi to give the Wolves the advantage after one period of play.

The Majors responded as they have many times this season with a better effort to start the second. Rob Flick was the first to score for St. Mike's on the man advantage early in the period. Rookie defenceman Stuart Percy scored the first goal of his OHL career to tie the game for the Majors, before Steve Reese put Sudbury ahead 3-2. Mississauga didn't let up and responded with two more goals coming from Jordan Mayer and Casey Cizikas to grab a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes.

The teams continued the see-saw battle in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Joseph Cramarossa put the Majors up by two, just over five minutes into the period. John Kurtz and Steve Reese added their second goals of the game, one minute apart from each other to tie the game at 5-5 and force overtime.

The extra period solved nothing and the teams headed for the shootout. William Wallen was the second shooter for the Majors and was the lone goal scorer of the teams. Stuart Percy and Casey Cizikas failed to score for Mississauga. Resse, Kurtz and Eric O'Dell all failed for Sudbury. The game marks only the third time this season the Majors have had to play overtime, and only the second shootout. Chris Carrozzi is a perfect 6-for-6 in saves this season, in shootouts. Stuart Percy had a multi point night for the Majors, adding an assist on Flick's goal in the second. Carrozzi made 14 saves for the Majors and earns his eighth win of the season. Alain Valiquette turned aside 22 saves and picks up the loss for the Wolves.

The Majors conclude the northern road swing in Sault Ste. Marie tomorrow night against the Greyhounds at 7:30. For information on Majors individual and season tickets for 2009-10, group and flex packages and private suites, visit the Majors website or call the Majors ticket line at 905-502-7788.
