Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

It didn't take long for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors to put their worst loss of the season behind them.

Riley Brace scored the last three goals of the game and Brandon Maxwell made 34 saves as the Majors scored a huge 5-2 win over the Oshawa Generals before 2,732 fans on Paint The Rink Pink V Night at the Hershey Centre on Friday night.

Mika Partanen scored the other two goals for the Majors, who moved to within one point of the seventh place Generals in the tight Eastern Conference standings with the win. Peterborough (54), Oshawa (53), Mississauga (52) and Belleville (51) occupy sixth through ninth place after Friday night's play.

Nicklas Jensen and Scott Laughton scored the goals for the Generals, while Kevin Bailie made 23 saves in goal.

The win was a crucial one for the Majors with the standings as tight as they are, but it was also important to respond after a terrible 11-0 loss in St. Catharines to the Niagara IceDogs the night before.

"It was a big bounce back game for us after a terrible loss the night before, the guys really stepped up," Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We really played well and showed some character in coming back the way we did.

"We had a physical element to our game that was missing for awhile, and I thought our top guys really played well and stepped up. Riley Brace was great, I thought Dylan DeMelo (two assists) was very good, and Maxwell also stepped up when called upon. I'm really pleased with the way we came through after such a bad loss."

The Majors opened the scoring with the lone goal of the opening period when Partanen scored on the power play at 15:38, giving Mississauga a big boost following the tough loss on Thursday.

Oshawa tied the game on Laughton's goal just 57 seconds into the second period, but the Majors answered back on another goal by Partanen, his 14th of the season, at 10:44 of the second period.

Jensen again tied the game with a power play goal at 12:45, but Brace responded with what turned out to be the game-winner at 13:49 of the second period to give Mississauga a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.

Brace gave the Majors a two-goal lead for the first time with his second of the night 6:33 into the third period, and completed the natural hat trick with his third of the night and 28th of the season into an empty net with just 48 seconds remaining in the game to seal the win.

The Generals went 1-for-7 on the power play while the Majors scored once in their five extra man opportunities.

It was a colourful night in the rink, as the ice surface was painted pink and the Majors wore specially designed light blue and pink jerseys to help raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The jerseys will be auctioned off on the CHL's auction site starting next week. Check the Majors website on Monday for all the details.

The Majors are home again on Sunday when they face the Windsor Spitfires at 2 p.m. on Faith and Family Day at the Hershey Centre.

Former Toronto Maple Leafs Mike Gartner and Mark Osborne will be on hand to drop the puck for the ceremonial faceoff, as well as interacting with fans following the game to discuss faith, hockey, and the game of life.

Be sure to bring your skates because after the presentation, there is a unique family skate opportunity taking place on the Hershey Centre main bowl.

Please help those in need and support the Salvation Army by bringing non perishable food items to the game. Tickets to Faith and Family Day on Sunday, February 12th are on sale through www.ticketmaster.ca, by calling (905) 502-7788, or in person at the Hershey Centre box office.
